Hijab which is known for the covering of Muslim women has been recognized by various philosophers, historians and sociologists around the world, specially the westerns. There are five main theories which have been mentioned by the top international theorists such as Will Durant and Bertrand Russell for the root of hijab’s arising: austerity and monasticism, lack of safety and social justice, patriarchy and economic exploitation, jealousy and selfishness in men, monthly period in women.
To be able to understand the topic of hijab, we need to analyze the word literally. The word hijab from the root h-j-b, literally meaning screen or curtain, refers to a sense of separation and protection. Hijab evolved in meaning and is commonly used for Muslim women’s veil and generally used to denote segregation between sexes.
In Q 33:59 which is known as the mantle verse, two social reasons is pointed for women’s covering: a good recognition as a modest person and staying safe from abuse.
قُل لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَغُضُّوا مِنْ أَبْصَارِهِمْ وَيَحْفَظُوا فُرُوجَهُمْ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ أَزْكَىٰ لَهُمْ ۗ إِنَّ اللَّـهَ خَبِيرٌ بِمَا يَصْنَعُونَ
به مردان مؤمن بگو چشمهای خود را (از نگاه به نامحرمان) فروگیرند، و عفاف خود را حفظ کنند؛ این برای آنان پاکیزه‌تر است؛ خداوند از آنچه انجام می‌دهید آگاه است!
Tell the faithful men to cast down their looks and to guard their private parts. That is more decent for them. Allah is indeed well aware of what they do.
النور؛ 30
Holy Quran 24:30
قُل لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَغُضُّوا مِنْ أَبْصَارِهِمْ وَيَحْفَظُوا فُرُوجَهُمْ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ أَزْكَىٰ لَهُمْ ۗ إِنَّ اللَّـهَ خَبِيرٌ بِمَا يَصْنَعُونَ

However, in a more comprehensive category for the reasons of hijab, Murtiza Mutahhari lists four reasons:
- Mental peace
- Solidity in families
- Social stability
- Respecting the value of women
The big deal about hijab is the modesty that both men and women must have a level of covering and a modest behavior, according to Q 24:30-31.
Some theorists like the psychiatrist Sigmund Freud, believe the foundation of human characteristics and activities is the sexual urge while some other consider sexual activity sinful!
Islam rejects both these views as extreme by considering sexual intercourse to be a natural, beautiful and pleasurable act that is to be enjoyed to ensure the continuation of the human race and to regulate natural sexual urges towards beneficial and fruitful ends within the secure boundaries of marriage.
